Hypocrisy

I'm listening to Surah Munafiqun in the Quran and reading the translation, and it scares me sometimes to think of those verses applying to me.

Alhumdullilah, I have firm faith in terms of the articles of Islamic faith... but the way that the Hypocrites are mentioned and described never cease to shake me up, and especially listening to those verses being recited in salaah always brings tears to my eyes.

Lo! the hypocrites seek to beguile Allah, but it is He Who beguileth them. When they stand up to worship they perform it lazily and to be seen of men, and are mindful of Allah but little;
4:142

The hypocrites, both men and women, proceed one from another. They enjoin the wrong, and they forbid the right, and they withhold their hands (from spending for the cause of Allah). They forget Allah, so He hath forgotten them. Lo! the hypocrites, they are the transgressors.
9:67

Those who were left behind rejoiced at sitting still behind the messenger of Allah, and were averse to striving with their wealth and their lives in Allah's way. And they said: Go not forth in the heat! Say: The fire of hell is more intense of heat, if they but understood.
Then let them laugh a little: they will weep much, as the reward of what they used to earn.
9:81-82

Sometimes it seems to me that we think of ourselves as being "safe". Almost like we have some sort of deal with God.. that we have a one way ticket to Paradise.

Umar bin Khattab once said to Hudhayfah (somewhat paraphrasing)
"I don't ask you to disclose to me the names of the Hypocrites, but just tell me whether or not I am listed among them"

This is Umar bin Khattab speaking here... the one about whom the Prophet said that if there were another prophet after him, it would have been Umar. If that is the concern he has about his faith, then where do we stand?

Our Lord! Cause not our hearts to stray after Thou hast guided us, and bestow upon us mercy from Thy Presence. Lo! Thou, only Thou, art the Bestower.
