Arabic exam tomorrow...

...and I have to listen to this (amongst others) online audio lesson:

AD-DARS UL-AWWAL:
AL-MUDARRIS MIN LUBNAAN

1st man: Hal anta `arabiyy?
2nd man: na`am.
1st man: Min ayy balad?
2nd man: Min Lubnaan.
1st man: Hal anta rajul `amaal?
2nd man: Laa. Ana mudarris. Wa anta?
1st man: Ana talib.
2nd man: Hal anta min Misr?
1st man: Laa. Ana min Suriyya.

(I just spent 15 minutes writing and formatting this post. I need to get back to the lessons.)

LOL!! bit basic isnt this?

hmm... well no wonder u didnt do well if u were doing color-coded blogging instead!!

jst kidding, inshaAllah ull be fine... and wt islamic classes, the benefit in the exam is more jst for a check and reminder than grading itself, the regular learning is more beneficial

haha... the thing I wrote IS basic and I understand what's being said... BUT these lessons were sort of a warm-up.

The *actual* audio we were tested on, we only got to listen in class, 30 minutes before the exam.

Still, even those weren't hard.

What killed me was the dictation. The prof was speaking *way* too fast for anyone to understand, and at first she didn't give us enough time between each sentence to complete writing. (Although, afterwards she repeated it like 20 times).

It was also hard sometimes to distinguish between some of the letters because they sound the same.

(I'm not quite sure what you mean with the Islamic courses. Grades really do matter when they count towards your GPA)

Assalaamu Alaikum :)

Aww I would love to learn arabic, how lovely!

Insha'Allah you did better than you expected. And I can't stand it when professors speak too fast, especially when talking in another language :S

It is basic, but it's still a good lesson :D It's a typical conversation too, so all the better.

Oh, Umar, How do you say suicide in Arabic?

*update*

btw - i thought ur arabic was jst for ur personal study rather than towards ur uni credits?

Umar said...

yeah it is.... and I made the mistake of not taking it with a pass/fail option... so now the mark does count towards my GPA.

fahimti?

suicide is intihaar.

Good luck with your Arabic classes Umar, though I recommend a term at the University of Damascus. A term is 6 weeks. Naturaly if you can stay longer that would be ideal, but it really is the quickest way to learn Arabic.
