salaams. pretty amazing... i was in beijing a few years back, and did manage to find mosques and halal restaurants even in beijing (most such restaurants having mongol roots), but the mosques inevitably were converted buildings, with animal sculptures lining the rooftops (gave me quite an unpleasant shock - what, that's a mosque??). in spite of speaking nothing but chinese (much like the rest of the country), i found the muslims to try their best to call out the adhan in arabic and greet one another with the islamic greeting in arabic; was pretty moving.
what annoyed me though was that none of the bathrooms in these muslim places had water provisions for istinja - i know it ain't a must, but many such places in most (every?) other country i've been to did.
