skunk? raccoon?

Not more than 20 minutes ago I was taking out the garbage. As I headed to the curb, I saw this large black thing moving about near the neighbour's recycling bin. (They put their stuff on the side of their house that connects with our lawn, ie right next to our garbage.) I thought to myself, "is that a skunk or a raccoon or something going through the trash?" Getting closer, it became apparent it was actually a person.. "Oh, it's just the neighbours putting out their garbage." So there I am, standing right beside this person and as I bend down to put it on the curb, I'm frightened by seeing an old Chinese woman, dressed in black with a black umbrella (it's pitch black outside and raining cats & dogs) rummaging through the recycling. I ask her "What are you doing?" to which the only reply I get is blank look and a hand up in protest as if to say "It's ok, I'm authorized to be here". Puzzled, I go back inside. From my room window I look to see her walk upto another house.
We don't live in downtown and we don't live in a ghetto by any standards. We live in a nice, quiet neighbourhood... where people go through other people's trash.

In slightly related news, after 4-5 days, the stench of a skunk on our street still remains... although not as strong as it was the first day. The smell is still in the air when you walk outside, it's in all of our cars, and traces of it can still be smelled in my room.

In completely unrelated news, Ramadhan is coming to an end and I'm looking forward to Eid. If there's one thing I've learnt this month, it's the power of an excuse. I "legitimately" excused myself from Taraweeh one night, because of a killer project & upcoming test. I have yet to find myself back in the Masjid. I used to be so good at attending every single Taraweeh. The whole reason I got my parents to sign up for the 407 Transponder was so I could rush back from my night class @ Sheridan in Oakville, quickly change and speed off to the Mosque. (I once made it back from Oakville to Markham in 30 minutes). Here's hoping I can do a better job next year.

In more completely unrelated news, I've been working on a new layout for my photoblog (as of now, all pages except "gallery" & "about" have been updated. Please take a look. Feedback would be nice :) I'd like to have it compatible with as many browsers possible.

Once when we threw out an old couch, a man and his little girl rang our doorbell to ask if he could have it for her because she had nothing to sleep on. That was sad..

I don't live downtown either but the houses on my street are big and my neighbours throw tons of stuff away so there's usually someone around to pick. I guess it's better for someone to take stuff rather than have it thrown away. Sometimes people throw some good stuff out..

And we have a skunk problem too :S I've SEEN the skunks.

see, I can feel sympathetic for the man asking about the sofa... but this lady was picking out plastic water bottles and aluminum cans.

About Tarweeh, right when you start making excuses, that kills the month. I did that as well when I had an essay due or other school work to get done. I should have left it til later. Sigh...not much I can do about it now :(

May Allah (swt) accept our fasting and good actions and forgive us our sins in this month. Ameen.
