I was going to post a longer entry, but I guess it can be summed up by saying that I wish it was easier to adhere to Islamic principles as it was a few years ago.

Assalamu 'alaykum warahmatullah,
True, but then in hard times the rewards are greater!!!

reader - while that may definitely be true, I'm not referring to any difficulties due to external factors, but rather internal ones. ie, issues of the nafs.

Salaam,
I think it so happens that when you have some knowledge fresh in your mind its easy to follow it.You do things with a lot of enthusiasm. It might be that it was a few years ago that you learned some islamic principles in detail so you followed them better. If thats the case I think you should keep the knowledge in continous revision. That ought to help. And then as READER put it,there is more reward for hard times.Even difficulties created by internal desires and your attempt to control them or even to feel bad about them, shall earn you good reward inshaAllah.

We've all got highs and lows. Sometimes, we're just Eman a-blazing (if you allow the term). Other times, we can't quite see who we are as Muslims. We're low. It's a natural cycle, and if it was always easy to follow Islamic principles, wouldn't the purpose of being tested be defeated?

Sometimes the people you love the most are the ones that stand in your way...and that's the most difficult situation of all.

even with internal issues, the reward will inshaAllah be greater - like it would be much easier for someone brought up in an islamic family to wear hijab whereas it might be a daily struggle for someone who's the only practicing sister in their community - so reward for jihad of the nafs is relative to the believer as with anything else...
